It’s been said that grief is like the ocean; waves that ebb and flow, sometimes calming and sometimes overwhelming. Theater director, choreographer, filmmaker, dancer, and surfer J’aime Morrison knows those channels well. In the year following her husband’s death, she surfed every single day. Little by little, her own movement and the movement of the sea remade her. After shaping and sharing a short film about riding the waves of loss, she created a framework for grief retreats that utilize surfing and body-led, feelings-based movement language as healing and expressive forms.
